Fly Fishing and Fly Tying

Through the year, Sand Spring Resort hosts a variety of fly fishing and fly tying seminars, taught by the area's leading experts and instructors. You'll learn an impressive variety of new skills through hands-on activities, then put them to use in beautiful Bennett Spring State Park, one of the state's finest trout fisheries. Regulations     [TOP]

  • Trout fishing is permitted here in accordance with the Wildlife Code and posted restrictions daily from March 1 through October 31, and during the winter fish-for-fun season is from the second Friday in November to the second Sunday in February, Friday, Saturday and Sunday only.
  • Each angler shall display a daily trout tag purchased on the area and bearing their signature.
  • Each angler shall have a state fishing permit except those 15 years and younger or Missouri residents 65 years and older.
  • Fishing hours are posted daily.
  • Each angler shall keep their trout separate at all times and identified with their name and address.
  • Daily limit 4, only one of which may be a brown trout equal to or greater than 15". No length limit on rainbow trout. Possession limit 8 trout.
  • Natural or artificial baits may be used except as posted. CHUMMING IS NOT PERMITTED.
  • No person shall continue to fish for any species in these trout waters after having four trout in possession.
  • THE USE OF GAME FISH OR PARTS THEREOF FOR BAIT IS PROHIBITED

Fishing Zones     [TOP]

Zone 1
From the hatchery dam upstream to end of area. Only fishing flies may be used. A fly is defined as a lure constructed on a single point hook, of feathers, tinsel, chenille, yarn, fur, hair, silk, rayon, or nylon thread or floss, with or without a spinner.

Zone 2
From hatchery dam to whistle bridge. Only selected artificial lures are permitted. These are manufactured lures, including flies. These lures may not contain natural food substances, fluids, soft plastics, rubber parts, or sponge. Spinners and treble hooks are allowed.

Zone 3
Whistle bridge to Niangua River. Only natural baits and those artificial lures artificial lures prohibited in other zones are permitted. Spinners may be included on baits.
